Description
Domaine des Carlines Côtes du Jura 'Le Calvaire' is a Chardonnay from the Jura, a small, self-contained wine region in the hills east of Burgundy.
The Jura vineyard once covered some twenty thousand hectares; phylloxera and the losses of the First World War reduced it to a fraction of that, and around two thousand hectares remain today. What survived is a distinctive set of habits and five grape varieties: Chardonnay, Savagnin, Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir. Chardonnay is the most planted of them, grown on the grey marl and limestone scree of the Revermont slopes at altitudes higher and cooler than the Côte d'Or. The Côtes du Jura appellation, created in 1937, runs the whole length of the region and takes in both topped-up and veil-aged styles of white.
Serve at 11 to 12 degrees with chicken, river fish or a wedge of Comté; Jura Chardonnay generally holds well for several years.
