Domaine des Croix Beaune 1er Cru Les Bressandes 2023

Domaine des Croix Beaune 1er Cru Les Bressandes is made from mature vines high on the Beaune slope, part of which is steep enough that it must be worked by horse.

Les Bressandes shares its name with a Grand Cru on the hill of Corton, and like Les Grèves it regularly produces Beaune's finest wines. David Croix's vines sit at 300 metres on a twenty-five-degree incline above the town, spread across three east-facing parcels planted in 1983, 1987 and 1991 and totalling 0.88 hectares. The soils are thin and gravelly, and the vineyard has been farmed organically for over a decade. Half the fruit was destemmed, extraction was kept careful and deliberate, and the wine was aged entirely in used casks. The result leans mineral, rocky and earthy rather than overtly fruity, which is characteristic of the site and of the domaine's restrained approach to winemaking.

Give young bottles air; it will drink well for a decade and more alongside roast beef, game birds or aged Gruyère. Serve at 16-18°C.
