Domaine des Croix Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves 2023

Domaine des Croix Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves comes from a vineyard widely regarded as the Grand Cru equivalent of Beaune, farmed here in a parcel of just 0.30 hectares.

Beaune has no Grand Crus, but Les Grèves is the site most often named in their place. Jasper Morris MW calls it the heartland of Beaune, and it typically gives the appellation's deepest and longest-lived wines. David Croix farms an old parcel planted in 1968, sitting immediately beside Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus, the most favoured stretch of the slope, on brown clay soils with a good proportion of gravel. The vines have been farmed organically for more than a decade. Whole bunches are used carefully rather than as a signature, and the resulting wine carries dark cherry fruit with a floral edge, considerable concentration and a long, powdery finish. Croix has run the domaine since 2005 and works with restraint in the cellar, favouring used oak and gentle extraction.

It rewards five to fifteen years in the cellar and suits roast duck, venison or a mature hard cheese. Serve at 16-18°C.
