Domaine des Croix Beaune 1er Cru Pertuisots 2021

Domaine des Croix Beaune 1er Cru Pertuisots is the most delicate of the domaine's Beaune crus, from half a hectare of lean brown clay on the Pommard side of the appellation.

Pertuisots lies mid-slope at the southern end of Beaune, towards the Pommard boundary. The soils are lean brown clay over a bedrock of Jurassic limestone, cooler and shallower than in the crus closer to the town, and that combination tends to give a lighter, more perfumed wine. Domaine des Croix farms half a hectare planted in 1971 and 1987; readers of Jasper Morris MW's Inside Burgundy may be amused to learn that the author holds a minority share in the vineyard. David Croix fermented the fruit with one-third whole bunches and raised the wine with minimal new oak, an approach consistent across his range and one that keeps these Beaune premier crus transparent to their sites. Australian allocations of this cuvée are new and small.

Approachable early and good for six to eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast quail, salmon or a mushroom tart.
