Description
Domaine des Croix Grand Cru Corton Les Grèves comes from a mid-slope parcel of 1960-planted vines on the hill of Corton, farmed organically since the domaine bought it in 2009.
Corton is the only red grand cru of the Côte de Beaune, a great wooded hill above Aloxe-Corton divided into climats of markedly different character, and Les Grèves is among its finest sectors for Pinot Noir. The parcel sits mid-slope with an ideal south-east exposure on reddish clay peppered with Ladoix limestone and some flint. Confusingly, David Croix also bottles a Beaune premier cru called Les Grèves, a separate vineyard in a different commune. The domaine acquired 0.55 hectares here in 2009 and has farmed it organically ever since. A smaller whole-bunch component than usual, 22 per cent, went into the fermentation, and it lends a vibrant freshness that lifts the deep, fleshy fruit the site gives.
Built for the cellar and worth ten years or more; decant if opening it young. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, game birds or hard mountain cheese.
