Description
Domaine des Lises Crozes-Hermitage Rouge is Maxime Graillot's estate Syrah, from gravel soils near Beaumont-Monteux.
Crozes-Hermitage surrounds the hill of Hermitage in the northern Rhône, and its south-eastern sector, around Beaumont-Monteux, has fast-draining alluvial stone and gravel with little clay, ground very similar to that of the neighbouring Domaine Alain Graillot vines. Domaine des Lises is Maxime Graillot's own estate, and the fruit comes from the lieux-dits Les Bosquets and Les Pichères, planted through the 1980s and now managed organically. Fermentations are entirely natural and only a small whole-bunch component of 20 to 30 per cent is used, so the wine comes around earlier than the fully whole-bunch bottlings under the Alain Graillot name. This vintage fermented in concrete before racking into Burgundy barrels of one to three years and a 12-hectolitre Stockinger cask, with under 10 per cent new oak, spending 11 months in barrel and three months in large tronconique vat before unfiltered bottling.
Drink over the next eight to ten years, with grilled lamb, roast beef or a peppered steak. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees.
