Description
Domaine des Lises Crozes-Hermitage Rouge Vignes Franches comes from six rows of ungrafted Sérine, an old selection of Syrah taken from the vineyards of Raymond Trollat.
In 2008 Alain and Maxime Graillot took massale cuttings from Trollat, the celebrated Saint-Joseph grower who had recently retired, whose vines lie in the historic heartland of Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. Trollat identified them as Sérine, believed to be an old type of Syrah that was all but eliminated from the northern Rhône once more productive, disease-resistant clones arrived. The Graillots planted the cuttings on 0.2 hectares of sandy soil at Beaumont-Monteux, close to Maxime’s main vineyard, and the vines are on their own roots, franc de pied by another name. Now that they are fruitful, the wine is made in a single six-year-old Stockinger foudre. The grapes are mostly destemmed and the wine is aged for as long as Maxime judges necessary, with no commercial pressure to release it. With vine age, selection, terroir and yield all in play, he is not yet drawing conclusions about how it differs from his classic Crozes beyond a deeper mineral seam and finer tannins.
Approachable now and worth eight to twelve years. Serve at 16-18°C with grilled lamb, peppered beef or a mushroom and lentil braise.
