Domaine Didier Dagueneau Vin De France Clos du Calvaire 2022

Domaine Didier Dagueneau Clos du Calvaire comes from a walled fifth of a hectare on top of the Saint-Andelain hill, and reaches Australia only a few bottles at a time.

The Dagueneau estate sits at Saint-Andelain in the eastern Loire, where Sauvignon Blanc grows on flint, clay and limestone, and where Didier Dagueneau spent two decades pushing yields down and precision up before his death in 2008; his son Louis-Benjamin has run the domaine since. Clos du Calvaire is a walled 0.2-hectare vineyard at the top of the hill that Dagueneau planted in the 1990s to densely spaced, ungrafted vines. The position was always considered ideal and the early wines were powerful and firmly structured, but the vines struggled, particularly in warmer seasons, and after the 2008 harvest Louis-Benjamin pulled them out. The land lay fallow for three years and was replanted in 2011 at 10,000 vines per hectare, oriented north to south. Production remains tiny and the wine is rarely seen outside France.

Best given a few years and capable of a decade or more. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast veal or a mature goat’s cheese.
