Domaine Dureuil-Janthial Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Clos des Argillières 2022

Domaine Dureuil-Janthial Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Argillières comes from 0.4 hectares of east-facing vines planted in 1942.

Clos des Argillières lies in the Premeaux sector at the southern end of Nuits-Saint-Georges, immediately alongside Domaine de l'Arlot's Clos de l'Arlot. The name points to the soil: pink Premeaux marble overlain by some sixty centimetres of clay-rich topsoil, which here gives a finer, less muscular reading of Nuits than the tougher sites nearer Vosne. Vincent Dureuil-Janthial is best known for his work in Rully, and this small parcel of old vines in the Côte de Nuits is a recent and very limited addition to the range. The vines date from 1942, and the wine is made in the domaine's usual manner, with careful extraction and ageing in cask where new oak is kept in check. Fewer than three cases reached Australia.

Fine-boned rather than powerful, it will drink well from three years and hold for a decade; match it with duck, mushroom risotto or roast veal. Serve at 16 to 18°C.
