Description
Domaine Dureuil-Janthial En Guesnes is a village Rully red from a site tucked behind the premier cru Le Meix Cadot.
En Guesnes, or Ez Guesnes as it appears on the map, sits on cool clay and limestone soils. Dureuil has a little Chardonnay planted there, but the bulk of his holding is a hectare of 40-year-old Pinot Noir supported by 0.3 hectares of 70-year-old vines. The winemaking is unusually painstaking for the price: the fruit was destemmed by hand so the grapes and their pedicels stayed intact, a method used by Bize-Leroy, Arnaud Mortet and Charles Lachaux among others. The grapes then sat at cold temperature for eight to ten days before any juice was released, and a further ten days after that before going to barrel, one-third of it new. The wine spent 18 months ageing, six of those in tank, and was bottled according to the lunar cycle.
Approachable from two years and good for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, braised beef cheeks or a mushroom tart.
