Domaine Dureuil-Janthial Rully En Guesnes Rouge comes from a cool clay and limestone site tucked in behind the Meix Cadot premier cru.

En Guesnes, which appears on the cadastral map as Ez Guesnes, is a small lieu-dit in Rully lying immediately behind the premier cru of Le Meix Cadot. The soils are clay over limestone and the site runs cool, which suits Pinot Noir in a warming climate. Vincent Dureuil is the leading grower of the appellation and has assembled an unusual holding here: a hectare of forty-year-old vines supported by a further 0.3 hectares of seventy-year-old material, along with a little Chardonnay. The winemaking follows the house pattern, with a pre-ferment cold soak, a measured extraction and an élevage in barrel with a modest share of new oak. The result is fuller and more structured than the village bottling, a red that stands comparison with wines from far grander addresses on the Côte de Beaune.

Give it two or three years and expect it to hold for eight. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, veal with mushrooms or a pork and fennel ragù.
