Description
Domaine Dureuil-Janthial Rully En Guesnes Rouge is a village red from a cool clay and limestone site tucked behind the Meix Cadot premier cru.
Rully makes both colours, and while the whites are better known, its Pinot Noir from the better lieux-dits can be excellent value. En Guesnes, which appears on some maps as Ez Guesnes and is pronounced roughly 'on gen', lies behind the premier cru of Meix Cadot. Vincent Dureuil-Janthial farms a hectare of forty-year-old Pinot Noir here, supplemented by 0.3 hectares of seventy-year-old vines, along with a small amount of Chardonnay. The soils are cool clay and limestone, and the wine they give is perfumed and finely drawn rather than broad, which is why the domaine describes it as Rully's answer to Volnay. Winemaking is straightforward: careful extraction and ageing in seasoned cask, with new oak kept well back.
Charming from release and good for six or eight years, it suits roast duck, mushroom tart or charcuterie. Serve at 16 to 18°C.
