Description
Domaine Faiveley Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a red Burgundy from a grand cru lying just downslope of Chambertin itself.
Gevrey-Chambertin has nine grand crus, more than any other commune on the Côte d'Or, and Charmes-Chambertin is the largest of them, taking in the neighbouring Mazoyères-Chambertin whose growers may use either name. The ground here is flatter and deeper than on the slope above, which historically made Charmes the most approachable of the family. Faiveley, a family house founded in 1825 and based at Nuits-Saint-Georges, farms an unusually large spread of premier and grand cru land; since Erwan Faiveley took charge in 2005 the cellar has worked with gentler extraction, closer sorting and less new oak than before.
Decant and serve at around 16 degrees with roast beef, hare or a mature Époisses; it is ready earlier than Chambertin but keeps for well over a decade.
