Description
Domaine Faiveley Pommard 1er Cru "Les Rugiens" is a Pinot Noir from the vineyard widely held to be the finest in Pommard, its name drawn from the red, iron-rich earth.
Pommard lies between Beaune and Volnay, makes red wine only and has no Grand Cru, so its reputation rests on Premiers Crus such as Les Rugiens and Les Épenots. Les Rugiens occupies the slope at the Volnay end of the commune and falls into two parts, the lower Rugiens-Bas being the section most often named as a candidate for promotion. The soil is a red clay and limestone unusually rich in iron oxide, which gives the vineyard both its colour and its name. Faiveley has been based at Nuits-Saint-Georges since 1825 and is now in its seventh generation; under Erwan Faiveley the house has moved to gentler extraction and less new oak.
Serve at 16 to 17 degrees with roast lamb, beef or game. It is a wine to cellar, and rarely shows its best before eight years.
