Description
Domaine Faiveley Vosne-Romanée is a red Burgundy from the village that sits at the very centre of the Cote de Nuits, and of Pinot Noir's reputation everywhere.
Vosne-Romanee holds more grand cru vineyards of the first rank than any other commune in Burgundy, among them Romanee-Conti, La Tache, Richebourg and Romanee-Saint-Vivant. The eighteenth century writer Abbe Courtepee observed that there are no common wines in Vosne, a line still quoted whenever the village is discussed. Village level wine comes from vineyards on the same limestone slope, below and around the classified sites. Faiveley has been in the same family since 1825, when the house was founded at Nuits-Saint-Georges, and it is now one of the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, with holdings from Chablis down to the Cote Chalonnaise. Under Erwan Faiveley, who took over in 2005, the house moved to gentler extraction and more restrained use of new oak, letting each commune speak more clearly.
A classic partner for roast duck, game, mushrooms and soft washed rind cheeses, served at around 16 degrees. It is approachable young but will happily keep for a decade.
