Domaine François Chidaine Montlouis Clos du Breuil 2019

Clos du Breuil is a single three-hectare site on one of the highest points in Montlouis-sur-Loire, home to some of François Chidaine's oldest vines.

Montlouis-sur-Loire faces Vouvray across the river and is planted to Chenin Blanc alone. Chidaine farms biodynamically, and this clos, a flint-stone's throw from Clos Habert, slopes down towards the Loire from high ground. The soil is clay and coarse flint over a limestone subsoil, the type known locally as les perruches, and the vines reach up to ninety years of age. Chidaine's holding is spread across several plots and the fruit is hand-harvested in several tris, then fermented naturally in 600-litre demi-muids over a period of up to ten months. The result is a dry Chenin with the flinty cut of the site and the depth that comes from old vines and a long, unhurried élevage.

Approachable now and rewarding for ten years or more; serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast pork or a fresh goat's cheese.
