Domaine François Chidaine Montlouis Clos du Breuil 2021

Domaine François Chidaine Montlouis Clos du Breuil is a three-hectare walled site holding some of the domaine’s oldest vines, approaching a century.

Montlouis-sur-Loire sits between the Loire and the Cher, making dry, off-dry and sparkling Chenin Blanc on soils of clay and flint over limestone. Clos du Breuil is one of its treasures, a single site that slopes towards the river a stone’s throw from Clos Habert and resting on one of the appellation’s highest points. The soil is clay and coarse flint over a limestone subsoil, what growers here call perruches, and the original plantings are approaching one hundred years old. Chidaine’s vines are spread across several plots and the fruit is hand-harvested in several passes. Fermentation runs naturally in 620-litre demi-muids over a period of up to eleven months, which gives texture without oak flavour. The wine is pure and vibrant, with textured stone fruit and the smokiness typical of the site, finishing taut and chiselled.

Good young and better still after five years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork belly, grilled prawns or a plate of goat’s cheeses.
