Description
Clos du Breuil is a three-hectare Montlouis site holding some of François Chidaine's oldest Chenin Blanc vines.
Montlouis-sur-Loire faces Vouvray across the river and works with the same grape on similar geology, though its soils tend to be sandier. Clos du Breuil slopes towards the Loire from one of the highest points in the appellation, a short distance from Clos Habert. The soil is clay and coarse flint over limestone subsoil, the combination locals call les Perruches. Chidaine's vines here average 50 years of age and reach up to 90 years. The fruit is hand harvested with several passes through the vineyard, then fermented naturally in 620-litre demi-muids where it stays for up to eleven months. The wine is dry, and the site's characteristic smokiness comes through the textured orchard fruit and tangy acidity that the long, gentle élevage preserves.
Approachable on release and worth cellaring five to eight years, it suits grilled fish, roast pork and washed-rind cheese; serve at 10–12°C.
