Domaine François Chidaine Montlouis Les Choisilles 2021

Domaine François Chidaine Montlouis Les Choisilles is named after the black flint that runs through the parcels behind it.

Montlouis-sur-Loire faces Vouvray from the south bank of the river and works with the same grape, Chenin Blanc, on tuffeau limestone under clay and flint. Chidaine is the appellation’s leading grower, and Les Choisilles is drawn mainly from Les Epinais, La Taille aux Loups and Clos Renard, where vines range from thirty to ninety years old. From 2021 Pierre Chidaine has taken the oldest vines in Les Epinais, now over sixty years, to make a separate lieu-dit bottling. The style here is concentrated and focused, a dry Chenin with a touch more extract than the Clos du Breuil, and one that often needs a few years to open out. The flinty smokiness the Choisilles rocks give is a consistent marker, set against creamy stone fruit and mandarin.

Worth three to five years in bottle and capable of a decade. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, grilled snapper or a mature goat’s cheese.
