Domaine François Chidaine Montlouis Les Tuffeaux 2019

Domaine François Chidaine Montlouis Les Tuffeaux is an off-dry Chenin Blanc from later pickings across the domaine's oldest plots.

Montlouis-sur-Loire produces Chenin Blanc across the full sweetness range, and Les Tuffeaux is Chidaine's off-dry, or demi-sec, cuvée. It is drawn from the second, later pass through a range of old Chenin plots, including Clos du Volagray, Saint-Martin and Les Grillonnières, all on stony soils heavy in the yellow limestone the Loire calls tuffeau. The vines range from thirty to ninety years and are always cropped at small yields. The wine fermented with native yeasts and then matured for ten months in 620-litre demi-muids. Chidaine does not make this cuvée every year, only when the fruit allows it. This release finished with 10 grams per litre of residual sugar, low for the wine, and that sweetness is all but hidden by the mineral and saline energy running through the palate. Expect length, intensity and a pulpy succulence over a mouthwatering backbone.

Drink now or cellar for a decade and more. Serve at 10-12°C with charcuterie, pork belly or south-east Asian dishes.
