Description
Domaine Gérard Boulay Sancerre Clos Beaujeu comes from two parcels of Kimmeridgian limestone at Chavignol, one of them inside a clos established by monks in the Middle Ages.
Chavignol is the hamlet within Sancerre whose steep terres blanches, white chalky clay and limestone, produce the appellation’s most structured whites. Le Clos de Beaujeu is one of Boulay’s historic sites, and he farms two parcels here, including one within the original clos laid out by the monks of Beaujeu, a plot known locally as Le Grand Clos. That is why he labels the wine Clos de Beaujeu rather than the more commonly seen Cul de Beaujeu. In his book on the Chavignol vineyard, Thibaut Boulay records the site appearing in documents as early as 1328. The vines range from thirty to a remarkable hundred and ten years old, and the rocky, fossil-strewn soils make the parcel very difficult to work; a second plot lies closer to the village on a sixty per cent gradient. The wine ferments naturally and is raised for ten months in large upright cask and older 300-litre barrels.
Worth three to five years in bottle and good for longer. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or a mature crottin de Chavignol.
