Description

Clos Beaujeu is one of Gérard Boulay's historic Chavignol sites, a Kimmeridgian slope first recorded in documents dating to 1328.

Chavignol is the hamlet within Sancerre whose steep white marl slopes, the terres blanches, give the appellation's most structured and long-lived Sauvignon Blanc. Boulay farms two parcels in this terroir, one inside the original clos established by the monks of Beaujeu in the Middle Ages, historically known as Le Grand Clos, which is why he labels the wine Clos de Beaujeu rather than the more common Cul de Beaujeu. Vine age ranges from 30 to a remarkable 110 years. The soils are rocky, limestone-rich and strewn with fossils, and a second parcel closer to the village runs at a 60% gradient, making both difficult to work. The wine ferments spontaneously and rests ten months in large upright cask and older 300-litre barrels.

Tightly wound on release and worth five to ten years in the cellar. Serve at 10 to 12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or crottin de Chavignol.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
