Domaine Gérard Boulay Sancerre Les Monts-Damnés comes from a 40-degree, south-facing plot on the terres blanches of Chavignol.

Monts-Damnés, pronounced mon-dannay, is the best-known vineyard of Chavignol, the hamlet west of Sancerre whose steep marl slopes produce the most textural and long-lived wines of the appellation. Gérard Boulay's family has worked here for generations. His bottling comes from 45-year-old vines on one of the steepest inclines of the vineyard, a 40-degree, south-facing plot on terres blanches, the white chalky clay and limestone that defines the site, directly adjacent to François Cotat's neighbours and Vatan's Clos la Néore. Boulay vinifies this cuvée in three to four-year-old Rousseau Tronçais oak casks, then finishes the ageing in large cask before bottling. Although the steep southerly aspect makes this one of Chavignol's warmest sites, the wine walks a line between ripeness and texture on one side and the invigorating tension that marks Boulay's Sancerre on the other.

Drink now or cellar for eight to ten years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or Crottin de Chavignol.
