Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Bourgogne Rouge 2023

Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Bourgogne Rouge comes from a single rocky parcel of fifty-year-old vines on the edge of Chambolle-Musigny.

Regional Bourgogne covers land all over the Côte, and its quality depends almost entirely on where the fruit is grown and who grows it. Barthod’s comes from 1.5 hectares in Les Bon Bâtons, a well-regarded site immediately outside the village boundary of Chambolle-Musigny, planted to vines of more than fifty years. The ground is very rocky, which is the main reason the wine carries more definition than the appellation usually suggests. Domaine Ghislaine Barthod farms around six hectares in Chambolle, almost all of it in Premier Cru, and this cuvée is made in the same cellar and to the same pattern as the rest: careful sorting, restrained extraction and moderate oak, with part of the ageing now taking place in 500-litre casks rather than barriques. It is perfumed, floral and red-fruited, and can pass for a good village Chambolle.

Ready on release and worth keeping for five or six years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, charcuterie or a mild soft cheese.
