Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes is the most structured of the domaine's premiers crus, from a plot lying directly below Bonnes Mares.

Chambolle-Musigny is the Côte de Nuits village most associated with perfume and fine-grained tannin, and Ghislaine Barthod is among its most respected growers, farming a remarkable spread of premier cru parcels. Les Baudes covers 3.42 hectares at the northern end of the village, immediately below the grand cru Les Bonnes Mares, on soil that is noticeably redder and rockier than the village norm. Barthod's holding here is tiny, just 0.19 hectares, making it one of her rarest bottlings, and the vines are now more than 45 years old. The extra iron-rich clay and stone in the soil give a wine with more muscle and grip than her other cuvées, which is why it typically asks for the longest time in the cellar. Commentators often describe it as the most Morey-like of her range, though the resemblance to neighbouring Bonnes Mares is the more telling comparison.

Give it five to ten years and expect it to hold well beyond that. It suits roast duck, mushroom risotto or a well-aged Époisses, served at 16°C.
