Description
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes is a two-parcel premier cru lying directly on from Les Amoureuses.
The commune of Chambolle-Musigny, between Morey-Saint-Denis and Vougeot, is the Côte de Nuits address most associated with scent and delicacy. Ghislaine Barthod is one of its benchmark growers, with holdings in a long list of premiers crus that she vinifies almost identically so their terroirs speak for themselves. Les Charmes can be read as the continuation of Les Amoureuses, and the site is far from uniform. Where the vineyard falls away on the lower slope, the soil is thin and stony and the bedrock sits only 50 to 60 centimetres beneath the surface, producing the wine's mineral lift and marked perfume; the mid-slope position adds flesh and texture. The upper part, adjoining Les Chatelots, has a deeper soil profile. Barthod's blend draws on one very rocky parcel beside Les Amoureuses and another on the deeper ground, with vines around 70 years old across a total of just 0.25 hectares.
Best from five years and good for a dozen; try it with squab, mushroom tart or soft washed-rind cheese at 16-18°C.
