Description
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes is effectively a continuation of Les Amoureuses, blended from two parcels of 70-year-old vines.
Chambolle-Musigny lies in the middle of the Côte de Nuits and is prized for perfume and fine-boned structure rather than sheer weight. Ghislaine Barthod farms one of the most complete collections of the village's premiers crus and works with gentle extraction and measured oak. Les Charmes sits directly below Les Amoureuses and shows how sharply Burgundian terroir can change over a short distance. On the lower part of the slope the topsoil is very thin and stony, with bedrock only 50 to 60 centimetres down, and that chalky base gives the wine its high-toned mineral character and intense perfume, while the position on the slope supplies depth and texture. Higher up, where the vineyard adjoins Les Chatelots, the soil profile is deeper. Barthod blends one very rocky parcel next to Les Amoureuses with a second on those deeper soils, but the two holdings together amount to just a quarter of a hectare.
Decant if opening early, or cellar it for eight to twelve years; it suits roast duck, mushroom risotto or Époisses, served at 16-18°C.
