Description
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Les Charmes is blended from two plots totalling a quarter of a hectare, one of them hard against the boundary of Les Amoureuses.
Les Charmes is in effect a continuation of Les Amoureuses, and it illustrates how quickly conditions change within a single cru in Burgundy. On the lower-lying part of the vineyard the soil is very thin and stony, with bedrock only fifty to sixty centimetres down; higher up, on the section bordering Les Chatelots, it is deeper and richer in clay, and gives more weight. Barthod draws on both: one very rocky parcel next to the Amoureuses border and another on the deeper ground, blended to combine the tension of the first with the depth of the second. Both plots carry old vines averaging around seventy years, and together they cover only a quarter of a hectare, so the wine is made in very small quantity.
Best from four or five years and good for fifteen. Serve at 16-18°C with roast pigeon, veal or a soft washed-rind cheese.
