Description
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Les Cras is the domaine’s most mineral cru, from a high, stony parcel of almost seventy-year-old vines.
Les Cras lies high on the slope in the northern half of Chambolle-Musigny, and Barthod farms 0.86 hectares there of vines averaging almost seventy years. The topsoil is thin and rocky, in places only thirty centimetres before the roots meet stone, and it grows shallower and whiter as you move south, away from the deeper red soils towards Les Fuées. That combination of altitude and bare rock gives one of the deepest and most mineral wines of the domaine, while the south-facing exposure ensures the fruit ripens fully. Ghislaine Barthod compares the intensity of Les Cras to that of Bonnes Mares, and the comparison is not idle: the wine has the flesh and depth to carry decades in bottle alongside the structure and class the site is known for.
Give it five years and expect it to hold for twenty. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, game or a mature hard cheese.
