Description
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées is made from 90-year-old vines in a climat that runs straight into Bonnes Mares.
Chambolle-Musigny sits on limestone in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, and Les Fuées is among its finest premiers crus, a 4.38-hectare site bordered by Les Cras below and the Bonnes Mares grand cru above. The wines are known for wild fruit, floral perfume and a texture that fills out with age, moving towards autumnal, spicy complexity. Ghislaine Barthod farms a quarter of a hectare here, on the mid-slope where white marl carrying fossilised oysters lies over a mother rock similar to that of part of Bonnes Mares, and her vines are close to 90 years old. Farming is meticulous and the winemaking deliberately restrained, with gentle extraction and a light hand with new oak. Yields in this parcel were tiny, so the quantity bottled is smaller even than the domaine's usual modest allocation.
Cellar it for eight to fifteen years, or decant it well ahead; it is good with hare, braised short rib or aged Comté, served at 16-18°C.
