Description
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées comes from a quarter-hectare of 90-year-old vines on the mid-slope beneath Bonnes Mares.
Les Fuées is one of the most highly regarded premiers crus in Chambolle-Musigny, a 4.38-hectare climat sandwiched between Les Cras to the south and the Bonnes Mares grand cru to the north. Good examples are expressive and textural, showing wild fruit and floral perfume when young and moving towards forest floor and spice with age. Ghislaine Barthod, who took over her father's domaine in the late 1980s, farms a small holding here of vines approaching 90 years old, well placed on the middle of the slope where the soil is white marl studded with fossilised oysters and the underlying rock resembles part of Bonnes Mares itself. The domaine's approach is consistent across the range: whole-cluster restraint, careful extraction and a modest proportion of new oak, so that differences between climats come through clearly. Yields in the parcel are minute, which keeps the quantity available very small.
Give it five to fifteen years, or decant it now, and serve with venison, braised beef cheek or a well-aged Comté at 16-18°C.
