Description
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers is made from 0.18 hectares of sixty-year-old vines, first bottled by the domaine in 2009.
Gruenchers sits north of Chambolle-Musigny on gentler ground directly below Les Fuées and Les Cras, separated from them by the sliver of premier cru Derrière la Grange. The clay here is deeper and whiter than in Les Fuées, which shows in the wine's flesh and texture, and Ghislaine Barthod places its style somewhere between Les Fuées and Aux Beaux Bruns, a reading that matches the vineyard's position on the slope. The domaine is one of the reference addresses for Chambolle premier cru, farming a mosaic of small parcels and vinifying each separately. Gruenchers is raised with 30 per cent new oak, a proportion that suits its deeply textured character without covering it. With so little planted, quantities are always small.
Approachable after three or four years and best between five and twelve. Serve at 16-18°C with roast guinea fowl, veal with mushrooms or Comté.
