Description
Domaine Goisot Irancy Les Mazelots is a biodynamic single-vineyard Pinot Noir from vines that are around a century old.
Irancy is a hamlet of just over 300 people set in a natural amphitheatre of vines two kilometres from the Yonne, roughly equidistant between Auxerre and Chablis. It is one of the most northerly appellations in France for red grapes and, like neighbouring Chitry and Saint-Bris, its wines rarely reach export markets. The vineyards, interspersed with cherry orchards, lie on slopes of Kimmeridgian limestone mixed with red clay; those highly mineral soils and the extreme northern latitude give the Pinots real energy, brightness and a chiselled edge. Guilhem Goisot, who farms biodynamically, holds a mere half hectare in the lieu-dit of Les Mazelots, planted to some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in France. Vine age and careful viticulture now deliver serious depth and flesh. Where these wines were once big and chewy in youth, recent releases show more plushness as the tannins and mineral intensity have been tamed.
Approachable now but worth five to ten years in the cellar. Serve at 16-18°C with coq au vin, roast pigeon or a mushroom ragout.
