Domaine Goisot Irancy Les Mazelots 2021

Domaine Goisot Irancy Les Mazelots is a biodynamic single-vineyard Pinot Noir from 100-year-old vines in one of the most northerly red appellations in France.

Irancy is a hamlet of just over 300 people, roughly equidistant between Auxerre and Chablis and two kilometres from the Yonne, ringed by a natural amphitheatre of vines interspersed with cherry orchards. Like the neighbouring villages of Chitry and Saint-Bris, its wines rarely reach export markets. The slopes are Kimmeridgian limestone mixed with red clay, and that combination with the far northern latitude gives Pinot Noir here an unusual brightness and a chiselled, tangy edge. Guilhem Goisot farms biodynamically and holds a scant half hectare in the lieu-dit Les Mazelots, planted with some of the oldest Pinot vines in France. Historically Irancy could be chewy and hard to approach young; Goisot's work in the vineyard and a lighter hand with extraction have brought more flesh and depth without softening the mineral drive.

Drinkable now with air and better still after three to six years. Serve at 16-18°C with duck, mushroom dishes or a plate of charcuterie.
