Description
Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc is a Chenin Blanc drawn from several of the crown-jewel limestone terroirs in and around Brézé, in magnum.
Saumur's chalky Turonian limestone gives Chenin Blanc a tension and salinity that sets it apart from the richer styles further up the Loire. This cuvée blends younger vines in the Clos de Guichaux and the Clos des Carmes with old vines from the Bas de Pentes sector of Brézé and a splash of Les Chapaudaises at Bizay. The Clos des Carmes in particular sits on the chalky mother rock of the Brézé hill, just below the château. Plantings range from 1935 to 2012, so there is a good deal of old-vine material in the blend. All the estate's whites are whole-bunch pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts. Historically this wine was vinified entirely in tank, though recent vintages have been raised partly in tronconique oak to widen the texture and temper reduction.
Drinking well now and worth up to a decade in magnum; serve at 10–12°C with grilled fish, roast pork or goat's cheese.
