Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Brézé Blanc 2018

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Brézé Blanc is a Chenin Blanc from two parcels of mature vines planted in 1933 and 1952 on the Brézé hill.

The modern renaissance of what was once called Chenin de Brézé owes much to the Foucault brothers and, more recently, to growers such as Romain Guiberteau. This wine comes from two small parcels within the fabled Brézé climat, a terroir that once produced wines held in the same regard as the finest of Burgundy and Bordeaux, with a quarter of the fruit also drawn from the historic Clos de Carmes. Brézé is not typical Saumur: the vineyards sit at higher elevation than the surrounding country, directly on a hill of tuffeau, the porous chalky limestone mixed with clay and sand. Around 70 per cent of the vineyard has less than a metre of topsoil, so vines of any age must root into the chalk bedrock, and the result is a more citrus, floral and mineral expression of Chenin that stays cool and fresh even in powerful years. Guiberteau now uses larger-format barrels, favouring thick-staved demi-muids, and the wine spends two winters in barrel followed by six months in tank.

Built for the long haul; it will improve for fifteen to twenty years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast turbot, veal or aged comté.
