Description

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Brézé Blanc is a dry Chenin Blanc from two parcels of pre-war vines within the historic Brézé climat.

Brézé is a limestone hill in Saumur whose wines were once ranked alongside the greatest of Burgundy and Bordeaux, and its modern revival owes a great deal first to the Foucault brothers and then to growers such as Romain Guiberteau. This wine comes from two small parcels of mature vines planted in 1933 and 1952 within the Brézé climat, with a quarter of the fruit drawn from the historic Clos de Carmes. Guiberteau now works with larger-format barrels from several coopers, preferring thick-staved demi-muids from Atelier Centre France for this cuvée, and has also engaged Clos Rougeard's local cooper. The élevage has lengthened: the wine spends two winters in barrel followed by six months in tank, in recognition of the coiled energy the site produces. In style it leans towards the textural richness of fine Meursault.

It rewards five to fifteen years in the cellar, and suits roast chicken, turbot or a mature comté. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees.
