Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Brézé Blanc 2020

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Brézé Blanc comes from two parcels of Chenin Blanc planted in 1933 and 1952 within the historic Brézé climat.

Brézé is a limestone plateau south of Saumur whose wines were once ranked alongside the greatest of Burgundy and Bordeaux, and its modern revival owes much to the Foucault brothers and, more recently, to Romain Guiberteau. The bulk of this wine comes from a lieu-dit called Bourguenne, with a quarter drawn from the historic Clos des Carmes. Guiberteau has moved to larger-format barrels from several coopers, favouring thick-staved demi-muids from Atelier Centre France and casks from Dussiaux, the local artisan cooper who supplied Clos Rougeard, which lend a smoky, cedary edge in youth. The wine now spends two years in barrel, half of it new, and six months in tank, a regime chosen to suit its power and coiled energy. It has the savoury reduction and texture of fine white Burgundy alongside the raciness of good Riesling.

Tightly wound on release; give it three to five years and expect it to hold well beyond that. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork belly, scallops or aged comté.
