Description
Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Les Arboises Rouge is the estate's top red, from a monopole parcel of Cabernet Franc planted in 1957 on the Brézé hill.
Les Arboises is a subsection of the limestone-dominant Brézé hill and one of the most highly regarded red terroirs in Saumur. Guiberteau's monopole parcel was planted in 1957 on rocky, chalky ground, a site that gives graceful, mineral wines with a firmer, more angular tannin than his other reds. The fruit is fully destemmed and fermented naturally in concrete, then rests eighteen months in a mix of new, one-, two- and three-year-old barrels. New oak is now about one fifth, well down from the roughly half used in early releases. Because of those angular tannins, Guiberteau ages this cuvée longer than his others in both barrel and bottle. This release is tighter and more compact than the 2018, with brooding depth, leafy lift and a long, mineral-flecked structure.
Impressive now after a thirty-minute decant and better again in five to ten years; serve at 16–18°C with roast beef, game birds or a hearty mushroom dish.
