Description
Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Rouge is the domaine's village Cabernet Franc, blended from parcels around the Brézé hill.
The Saumur appellation runs along the left bank of the Loire and up onto the tuffeau plateau to its south, and it is Cabernet Franc, rather than any Bordeaux blend, that makes the reds. Romain Guiberteau farms from Mollay near Brézé and built the domaine back up from vineyards his family had leased out. This wine assembles fruit from several parcels of shallow soil over tuffeau, picked by hand and fermented with indigenous yeasts, with a portion of whole bunches depending on the year. Extraction is deliberately light, and the wine goes into older barrels and tanks rather than new oak. The result is a Loire red made for drinking rather than for keeping, fresh and fine-boned with gentle tannin.
Best in its first few years, and no harm in serving it lightly chilled. Serve at 14–16°C with charcuterie, roast chicken or a vegetable tart.
