Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Rouge 2017

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Rouge is the domaine's village red, from two hectares of Cabernet Franc planted in the mid-1950s across three parcels on the Brézé hill.

The Saumur appellation runs along the left bank of the Loire and up onto the limestone plateau to its south, and it is Cabernet Franc, rather than any Bordeaux blend, that makes the reds. Romain Guiberteau left law school to take over his family's vines at Mollay, in Saint-Just-sur-Dive, in 1996, and was taught a good deal by Nady Foucault of Clos Rougeard; the estate now covers a little over nineteen hectares, farmed organically from 2000 and certified AB in 2007. This wine draws on three parcels on Brézé, planted between 1955 and 1957, on silty sand over limestone bedrock. The fruit is sorted in the vineyard, completely destemmed and fermented on ambient yeasts, and the wine is raised for ten to twelve months in steel and wooden tanks rather than barrel, then filtered. No new oak goes near it.

A Loire red made for drinking rather than keeping, and none the worse for being served lightly cool. Serve at 16°C with charcuterie, roast chicken or a vegetable tart.
