Description

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Rouge is a village Cabernet Franc from three parcels of old vines planted in the mid-1950s on the Brézé hill.

Saumur’s reds are made from Cabernet Franc on the tuffeau limestone of the middle Loire, and the Brézé hill is the sector on which Romain Guiberteau has built his reputation. This wine comes from three parcels planted between 1955 and 1957 on silty and sandy topsoils over limestone. The grapes are entirely destemmed, which pushes the wine towards fruit rather than structure; fermentation is natural and takes place in concrete, followed by 12 months in large tronconique barrels. The logic runs opposite to the domaine’s whites, where the Les Moulins bottling ranks above the village wine — with the reds Guiberteau evidently sees it the other way round, and the pricing follows. It is 100 per cent Cabernet Franc.

Drinking now and worth six to eight years. Serve at 16°C with roast lamb, duck breast or a mushroom and thyme tart.
