Description

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Rouge is a village Cabernet Franc from three parcels planted in the mid-1950s on the Brézé hill.

Saumur’s reds come from Cabernet Franc grown on the tuffeau limestone plateau south of the Loire, and the Brézé hill is the most celebrated stretch of it. Romain Guiberteau’s village rouge is drawn from three parcels planted between 1955 and 1957, on silty and sandy topsoils over that limestone. The fruit is entirely destemmed and ferments naturally in concrete before 12 months in large tronçonique barrels. To keep a powerful vintage in check Guiberteau avoided punch-downs and pump-overs altogether, simply letting the grapes infuse in their own juice, which holds extraction to a minimum. The hierarchy here runs the opposite way to the whites, where the Les Moulins bottling is placed above village level; among the reds it is the village wine that takes precedence, and the pricing follows.

Accessible on release and good for six to eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with grilled lamb, duck breast or a plate of rillettes.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
