Domaine Henri Germain Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Les Fairendes 2022

Les Fairendes is one of the upper Morgeot climats, on the poorer white soils above the main road below Les Caillerets.

Morgeot is Chassagne-Montrachet's largest Premier Cru and can be bottled under any of some twenty separate lieux-dits, with the finest of them in the upper sector, above the road, where the soils are thinner and whiter. Les Fairendes belongs to that group. Thierry Pillot, whose family has no holding here, has recounted his grandfather's view that this vineyard, just below Les Caillerets, was the best terroir within Morgeot. Domaine Henri Germain, based in Meursault, makes only a small quantity. The house style rests on whole-bunch pressing, long, patient élevage on lees and sparing use of new oak, which suits a site of this kind: the wine is chalky and driven rather than broad, and stands well apart from the fuller, clay-grown examples of Morgeot.

Best given three to five years and good for well over a decade. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled crayfish, roast chicken or a hard mountain cheese.
