Domaine Henri Germain Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge 2020

A village red from a Meursault house whose Chassagne holdings came into the family through Henri Germain's wife, Paulette Pillot Germain.

Chassagne-Montrachet was historically a red wine village, and Pinot Noir is still planted on its heavier, redder clay, mostly on the lower and southern parts of the commune; the wines are firmer and more savoury than Volnay and less broad than Pommard. Domaine Henri Germain was founded at Meursault in 1973 and is run today by Jean-François Germain, with his daughter Lucie alongside him since 2018, across seven hectares of which about three-quarters is white. Soils are ploughed, no herbicides are used, the picking is by hand and yields are deliberately low. Reds are normally destemmed - whole bunches appear only in exceptional seasons, perhaps twice a decade, and then to no more than a quarter of the vat. Ageing is in 228-litre barrels from Rousseau and François Frères, with new wood held to a maximum of twenty to twenty-five per cent, and the wines are rarely fined or filtered before bottling.

Best given two to four years and good for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, beef bourguignon or a mushroom risotto.
