Description

Domaine Henri Germain Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge is drawn from a single clay-rich parcel in Les Battaudes planted in 1951.

Chassagne-Montrachet is thought of today as a white wine village, but red was the mainstay here for much of its history and the heavier, clay-based soils on the lower ground still suit Pinot Noir. Domaine Henri Germain, based in Meursault, makes only a small quantity. The fruit comes from Les Battaudes, just below the Abbaye de Morgeot on the boundary between Chassagne and Remigny, planted in 1951 and among the older vine material in the commune. Only a small proportion of whole bunches went into the fermentation and the wine was raised without any new oak, an approach that keeps the emphasis on the firm, red-fruited character the clay gives rather than on the cellar. Production runs to a few barrels, so the wine is seen in Australia in very small quantities.

Best from two or three years after the harvest and good for six or so. Serve at 16-18°C with duck confit, braised beef cheek or a wedge of Époisses.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
