Domaine Henri Germain Meursault 1er Cru Poruzots 2020

Les Poruzots is a Meursault premier cru, and Domaine Henri Germain's quarter-hectare of it came to the family from François Jobard.

Poruzots sits above the village at the northern end of the Meursault slope, next to Genevrières, on stony, well-drained ground; it has a name for giving Meursault with more grip and structure than Charmes, and for repaying keeping. The domaine was founded in 1973 by Henri Germain and is now run by his son Jean-François, joined by his daughter Lucie in 2018 - seven hectares in all, about thirty thousand bottles a year, three-quarters of it white. The soils are ploughed and no herbicides are used, picking is by hand and yields are kept low. In the cellar the approach is patient rather than interventionist: cool fermentations that run for months, a late malolactic, and the wine left on its lees without racking, eighteen months for the village wines and twenty-two for the premiers crus. The barrels are standard 228-litre pieces from Damy, Seguin-Moreau and Rousseau, with new wood capped at twenty to twenty-five per cent, and fining and filtration are rare.

Best from three years and good for a decade or more. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, grilled crayfish or a mushroom and Comté gratin.
