Domaine Henri Germain Meursault Clos des Mouches Rouge 2021

Domaine Henri Germain Meursault Clos des Mouches Rouge is a red Meursault from a half-hectare walled monopole, bottled under the village name rather than as Volnay.

Meursault is known almost entirely for white wine, and the small amount of Pinot Noir grown in the commune is often sold under a Volnay label, the rules allowing reds from the Santenots sector to be bottled as Volnay-Santenots. Germain takes the other path and calls a Meursault a Meursault. This Clos des Mouches is not the better-known Beaune premier cru of the same name but a monopole of about half a hectare, one of the few walled vineyards left in the village. It lies near the Volnay boundary, due south of Les Santenots. The vines are old Pinot Fin planted in 1949, and yields fall under 25 hl/ha even in a generous year. Winemaking is deliberately understated, with gentle extraction and restrained use of wood, so the perfumed, red-fruited character of the site carries the wine.

Pretty and open early, it will hold for five or six years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, veal or a mushroom tart.
