Domaine Hubert Lamy Santenay 1er Cru Clos des Gravières Blanc 2021

Domaine Hubert Lamy Santenay 1er Cru Clos des Gravières Blanc comes from a walled plot of 0.38 hectares that a nineteenth-century classification of Burgundy ranked as a tête de cuvée.

Santenay marks the southern end of the Côte de Beaune and is far better known for red wine, but the northern edge of the commune, up against the Chassagne-Montrachet border, behaves differently. The Clos des Gravières is a historic walled section within the larger Gravières vineyard there, effectively a continuation of the Clos de Tavannes, set on a slope of about thirty degrees where the vines root quickly into pure limestone. Lamy makes both white and red from the clos, with 0.28 hectares of Pinot Noir alongside the Chardonnay. Most of the white vines are relatively young: the domaine has raised planting density and replaced weaker material with massale cuttings taken from a parcel planted in 1968. A large part of this cuvée was fermented in glass Wineglobe vessels rather than barrel, so the wine sees no oak at all.

Give it a year or two, then drink across five to eight. Serve at 10-12°C with spanner crab, veal blanquette or a soft washed-rind cheese.
