Description
Domaine Hubert Lamy Santenay 1er Cru Clos des Gravières Rouge comes from a 0.28-hectare parcel of fifty-year-old vines planted at 20,000 vines per hectare.
Santenay sits at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune and remains one of the better-value sources of red Burgundy, its premier crus giving firmer, more mineral wines than the appellation's reputation suggests. Clos des Gravières is a walled site, and Olivier Lamy's holding within it is tiny, just 0.28 hectares of vines more than fifty years old. As in his white vineyards, the density has been pushed up, here to 20,000 vines per hectare. The vines are not trimmed in the usual way but wrapped together at the top, a technique known as tressage, and they give small berries with little juice. The wine was made with 60 per cent whole bunches, which brings perfume, structure and a tapering finish, and raised in used barrels.
Worth two or three years and good for eight to ten. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, duck or a mushroom and lentil braise.
