Domaine Hubert Lamy Santenay Clos des Hâtes Rouge 2022

Domaine Hubert Lamy Santenay Clos des Hâtes Rouge comes from a walled plot in one of Santenay’s best village climats, once owned by the man who also owned Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

Santenay marks the southern end of the Côte de Beaune and is chiefly red wine country, its heavier clays suiting Pinot Noir. Les Hâtes is surrounded by premier cru sites and is generally counted among the strongest village terroirs in the commune. Lamy’s 0.67-hectare plot sits in the heart of the climat, inside the original walled vineyard, which in the nineteenth century belonged to Monsieur Duvault-Blochet, at that time also the owner of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Most of the fruit comes from vines massale-selected in 1999 from the vineyards of d’Angerville and Henri Boillot and planted on rootstock that produces very small berries and bunches; there is also a parcel of older vines. The clay drives the wine, giving it muscle and grip rather than delicacy.

Chewy and long, and best from three years out to ten. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, roast lamb or a mushroom and barley stew.
